Fat Reduction Without Surgery: Myth or Fact?
Up until now, those who sought to reduce diet and exercise resistant pockets of fat may have seen surgery, such as liposuction, as their only option. CoolSculpting and recently FDA approved Liposonix are two new approaches doctors are using to give those with undesirable fat a non-surgical alternative. New York City Dermatologist, Dr. Cameron Rokhsar, explains how each method uses a different technique to manipulate fat cells through the skin, reducing inches around the waist and hips without surgery.
Liposonix is a non-surgical alternative for those who would like a modest reduction in exercise resistant fat with minimal recovery time.

Even with exercise and a healthy diet, stubborn fat pouches can remain, causing frustration and a self-conscious body image. Many believe liposuction, the most common cosmetic operation in the United States to address unwanted fat, is the only way. While under anesthesia, fat is extracted through small incisions using a suction pump. Busy schedules may not permit the inconvenience of recovery time. Although non-invasive options aren’t a replacement for liposuction, there are two promising new procedures for treating unwanted fat, allowing patients to see fast results with minimal downtime.
At an international laser conference held in Moscow, Russia in October 2012, attended by hundreds of dermatologists, Dr. Cameron Rokhsar, Professor of Dermatology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York, and Dr. R. Rox Anderson, director of Wellman Laser Laboratories at Harvard Medical School, spoke about the status of non-invasive fat reduction procedures currently available. Dr. Rokhsar presented the most up-to-date clinical findings, as the first physician in the United States to have used the Liposonix device, a leading non-invasive fat reduction option. Dr. Rox Anderson, who developed the concept of CoolSculpting, spoke about non-invasive fat reduction through freezing fat cells.
“Liposonix is a non-surgical alternative for those who would like a modest reduction in exercise resistant fat with minimal recovery time,” Dr. Rokhsar said. “The ultrasound creates a powerful thermal effect that focuses at specific depths in fatty layers, safely destroying fat without damaging surrounding tissue in a one-hour session.”
This minimal risk procedure uses a high intensity focused ultrasound to destroy targeted fat in the abdomen, flanks, back, thighs, buttocks and arms, which show results within 8-12 weeks.
CoolSculpting, also known as Zeltiq, is another effective non-invasive, FDA approved procedure that uses a unique technique for destroying unwanted fat. A procedure developed at Wellman Laser Laboratories at Harvard Medical School is based on research that has shown fat cells are more vulnerable to cold temperature than any other surrounding tissue. Extreme cold temperatures are emitted through cooling plates that suction the targeted area for an hour, during which time fat cells are turned from a soft to solid form. Literally freezing fat cells through prolonged controlled cooling, allows the body to naturally metabolize frozen fat out of the body. Results begin to show in three weeks with progressive improvements within four months post-treatment.
Doctors in the United States look forward to the FDA’s approval of Ultrashape, another fat reduction procedure that utilizes ultrasound. Widely used in 47 other countries, Ultrashape uses pulsed acoustic waves to target fat areas without disrupting surrounding tissue. This hour-long procedure applies confined volume frequencies to separate and suspend fat into a fluid between cells.
“Liposnoix and CoolSculpting are two new alternatives to liposuction for patients who are surgery averse,” Dr. Rokhsar said. “This is the first time we have been able to affect fat cells through the skin without surgery.”
Dr. Cameron K. Rokhsar, M.D., is the first physician to use the Liposonix procedure in the United States. He is the leading authority on laser surgery and non-invasive fat reduction. A graduate of Harvard and New York University and fellowship-trained dermatologist and laser surgeon, Dr. Rokhsar is an extensively published medical author and Professor of Dermatology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Rox Anderson is Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Wellman Laser Laboratories and is credited with the development of the concept of CoolSculpting.
