Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Facelift & Facial

Written by Dr. Rokhsar

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Doctors have been practicing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy as an effective tissue treatment for decades by using a small vial of the patient’s blood. Because blood is composed of red cells, white cells, and platelets, doctors isolate the plasma, which contains a concentration of plasma and rich growth factors that help stimulate new, and healthy tissue growth. Well, known athletes, such as Tiger Woods and Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward have used the therapy to speed up the healing of injuries. Patients can reap the same type of benefits, but for skin rejuvenation. Because the treatment uses the patient’s own blood, there is virtually no risk the patient will experience an allergic reaction.

What to Expect:
A small amount of blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the rest of the blood. While the PRP is being prepped, patients will have their skin cleansed for treatment and PRP is injected into specific areas of the skin. The entire procedure only takes approximately 15 minutes and patients report a relatively painless experience.

Although some experience mild swelling, redness, or bruising that fades within three days post-treatment, patients will begin to see their results within three to four weeks, which includes softened wrinkles, smoother, toned texture, and tighter skin. Because the plasma concentration also contains collagen, which is a natural type of protein that makes up the structural component of the skin, it improves the skin for a more youthful appearance. Three treatments are recommended between one to two months apart to achieve the best outcome.

PRP Facials

Using the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma, Dr. Rokhsar will inject mixture using microneedles to penetrate deep within the underlying layers of the skin in order to trigger the body to begin its natural healing process. The skin absorbs the high concentrations of growth factors from the PRP, ultimately rejuvenating and improving the skin’s texture. Once the redness reduces over the course of 1 to 3 days, patients will begin to see the tightening and rejuvenating results. Typically, the best results are seen within 3 to 6 treatments approximately a month apart. Afterward, patients can receive periodic touch up to maintain results.

PRP Facelifts

When a photo of Kim Kardashian’s blood-covered face went viral, many beauty consumers wondered what her new skin care routine included. The PRP Facial she underwent is a skin-rejuvenating treatment that relies on a vial of her platelet-rich plasma, which is then combined with fillers, such as Restylane or Juvederm. Both fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that lifts the skin to restore a youthful volume and shape back to the face. The mixture is injected into the face to stimulate collagen and create a new skin that smoothes out and removes fine lines and acne scars. Results may take up to 8 weeks to fully reveal themselves, but the progressive improvement also helps minimize pores and reduce blemishes.
