PRP Hair Loss Injections in NYC and Long Island

Rediscover Thicker, Healthier Hair with PRP Treatments provided by New York Cosmetic Skin & Laser Surgery Center

What is PRP Therapy and How Does It Work?

Platelet-Rich Plasma or protein rich plasma (PRP) hair loss injections, a popular choice in NYC & Long Island, combat signs of hair thinning and hair loss both in men and women. By utilizing the natural healing properties of your blood’s platelets and plasma rich protein, PRP injections can rejuvenate hair follicles and stimulate hair growth, by increasing blood supply and nutrient rich plasma to the hair follicles.  PRP is also commonly used for facial rejuvenation through direct injections into the face as well as combined with microneedling.  Studies have shown that 3 sessions of PRP injections performed at monthly intervals followed by maintenance injections done every 6 months to a year, not only help grow new hair on the scalp, but also help maintain a healthy hair density and thickness of the hair on a long-term basis.  Other areas of medicine where PRP injection have been used with success is in orthopedics, where doctors inject PRP into injured and painful joints of knees, shoulders and elbows which expedites healing.

How are PRP injections done for hair loss?

  • Preparation: A small sample of your blood is drawn (in a special sterile PRP tube), similar to a routine blood test.
  • Processing: The blood is processed in a centrifuge to separate and concentrate the platelets and plasma which is rich in nutrients for the hair follicle.
  • Injection: The PRP is expertly injected into areas of the scalp experiencing hair loss.

PRP For Hair Loss Injections FAQ

How do injections for hair loss work?

The procedure is a three-step process. First, we draw a patient’s blood (usually from the arm), put it in a centrifuge to separate it into a concentration of platelet-rich growth factors, and finally, inject it into the scalp. This restimulates the production of hair follicles, creating a natural and thicker head of hair.

Does it hurt?

Our patients typically report no pain throughout their entire treatment. Dr. Rokhsar will give nerve block injections making the procedure completely painless.

How is the recovery period?

There is no traditional downtime or recovery associated with treatment. You can resume your regular activity immediately after leaving our office.  It is best to wait 24 hours before showering and washing your hair, after leaving our office.

How many sessions will I need?

As a general recommendation, we have seen that this natural hair loss treatment can be effective if performed once a month for the first three to four months and then every six months after.  These guidelines have been reported in the scientific dermatology literature.

Am I a candidate?

Men and women of all ages experiencing mild, moderate or severe hair loss are good candidates for a hair restoration treatment with PRP injections. Patients with relatively healthy and active hair follicles tend to see the best results. The procedure is also popular among patients with androgenic alopecia.

Are there any associated risks?

PRP hair loss treatment is considered safe and effective.   There are no real side effects associated with PRP injections as we are using your own natural blood products for the injections.  Swelling and redness generally do not occur after PRP injections. If swelling and redness do occur, they typically fade within one to two days. Be honest with your doctor about any medical conditions before the procedure. or if you are taking blood thinners.

What is PRP hair restoration?

PRP hair restoration is a procedure in which a patient’s blood is drawn and then processed in a centrifuge to isolate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) portion of the blood. The PRP is then injected into the patient’s scalp to promote hair growth and slow the rate of hair loss. PRP contains growth factors that can help stimulate hair follicles and encourage new hair growth. Some doctors believe that PRP therapy may even help regrow new hair. PRP hair restoration is considered to be a safe and less invasive alternative to hair transplant surgery, and it has become an increasingly popular treatment option for those experiencing hair loss.

How many PRP injections are needed for hair?

The number of PRP injections needed for hair loss varies depending on the severity of the hair loss and the individual patient’s response to the treatment. However, most PRP therapy for hair loss typically requires an initial series of 3 treatments spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments are also required every 4-6 months to maintain the positive effects of the treatment. In other words, most patients will undergo 3-4 treatments in the first year and 2 treatments per year after that to maintain their results.

How often can you get PRP injections for hair growth?

Most patients require a series of three PRP injections, spaced 4 weeks apart, to achieve optimal results. After this initial series of 3-4 injections sessions done on a monthly basis, maintenance treatments may be recommended every 4-6 months to help sustain hair growth and thickness.

The frequency of maintenance treatments can vary based on individual patient factors, such as age, genetics, and amount of hair loss. Additionally, the duration of PRP treatment effects can also vary, with some patients experiencing results lasting up to a year, while others may require more frequent treatments. Dr. Rokhsar may recommend treatment with other medications including finasteride and minoxidil in addition to PRP injections for better hair growth results.  Dr. Rokhsar may also order blood tests to ensure that there are no blood abnormalities contributing to your hair loss.
