Why Double Chins are Acquired

A common misconception attributes the development of a double chin solely to obesity. While weight gain is a frequent contributor to the despised second-chin, it isn’t the only one. Such cases of accumulated subcutaneous fat deposits are typically due to the following:

  • Weight Gain or Loss: Drastic weight gain or loss causes your skin to react by transforming its shape. This makes the skin become loose, resulting in a stretchy and deformed composure.
  • Genetics: Sometimes, our bodies are predisposed to traits and characteristics, so this one’s unavoidable
  • Facial Expressions: The way we move our facial1 features can result in structural changes on our faces, resulting in the formation of a second chin.
  • Obesity: Individuals who experience obesity have greater subcutaneous fat density, causing the skin to hang and create a double-chin.

A double chin can occur with anybody, irrespective of age or gender, and is often impossible to be rid of without the help of a professional. Though sometimes unavoidable, Dr. Rokhsar features many options for individuals looking to reduce the appearance of fat surrounding the chin region.

Treatment Options

Dr. Rokhsar has extensive training in a host of unique chin reduction techniques. His research and training allow him to decide the best treatment option for each patient while helping you achieve your goals. The physician will tailor your procedure to the severity of fat underneath your chin and your aesthetic goals. Treatment options include:

  • Kybella: Kybella is a five-minute injectable we utilize to destroy fat cells and tighten skin. This non-invasive procedure allows us to predictably re-contour your neck2 and provides you with a more uniform and beautifully rejuvenated appearance in 3 to 5 visits. Since there is a slight recovery time involved with Kybella, we usually recommend this treatment for individuals with minimal subcutaneous fat. Dr. Rokhsar was one of the first providers of Kybella in the country and additionally teaches other medical professionals how to administer Kybella under his Allergan training certification.
  • CoolMini/CoolSculpting: This process destroys subcutaneous tissue via thermal energy during one hour sessions, but does not tighten skin. CoolMini and CoolSculpting technology work well for minimizing a large volume of neck fat and though the results take longer to appear, downtime is very minimal. Dr. Rokhsar is one of the first CoolSculpting doctors in the US, as he has been performing these treatments since 2008.
  • Neck Liposuction: We reserve this procedure for individuals with a high volume of fatty tissue in the neck and chin area. The treatment is invasive and allows the surgeon to physically remove stubborn fat while you’re under local anesthesia. We recommend you rest for at least a week after your liposuction, but the results are worth the downtime and your confidence will prove it.

Double Chin FAQs

What causes a double chin?

One of the primary causes is excess fat in the chin and neck area, which is commonly associated with weight gain or obesity. Genetics also play a significant role in the development of a double chin. Aging and loss of skin elasticity can also contribute to the appearance of a double chin. Medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, chronic sinusitis, and kidney disorders can also cause swelling in the neck and face, leading to the appearance of a double chin. In some cases, a double chin may be a side effect of certain medications such as prednisone. Fortunately, there are several effective treatments available to help reduce or eliminate a double chin, such as CoolSculpting, Kybella injections, and liposuction.

How to prevent double chin?

The best way to prevent a double chin is to maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Weight gain is a common cause of double chins, so keeping your weight in check can help prevent excess fat from accumulating under your chin.

Another way to prevent a double chin is to practice good posture. Keeping your head up and your neck straight can help tone the muscles in your neck and prevent sagging skin. Additionally, avoiding excessive alcohol consumption and smoking can help prevent skin damage and premature aging, which can contribute to the development of a double chin.

If you are already experiencing the beginning signs of a double chin, there are a number of non-surgical treatments that can help. These include injectable treatments like Kybella, which can break down and dissolve excess fat under the chin. Minimally invasive liposuction under local anesthesia is another simple option to get rid of a double chin in one session.

How to remove the double chin?

One of the most popular and effective procedures for removing a double chin is Kybella. Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that targets and dissolves fat cells under the chin. It contains a naturally occurring substance that aids in the breakdown and absorption of fat in the treated area. Kybella requires multiple treatments to achieve optimal results. The New York Cosmetic, Skin & Laser Surgery Center was one of the first clinical study sites for Kybella. We have published scientific articles about Kybella. We were also among the first practices in the country to use Kybella for non surgical lipoma removal.

Another non-surgical option is CoolSculpting, which uses controlled cooling to freeze and eliminate fat cells under the chin. This procedure can reduce the appearance of a double chin by up to 25% in one treatment session.

Depending on the amount of fat in the area, you may be a good candidate for liposuction to contour the neck and chin. Dr. Rokhsar is an expert in liposuction and has successfully performed the procedure on hundreds of patients with phenomenal results. Liposuction is performed in our accredited operating room in the Garden City office. It is done under local anesthesia and the recovery period is approximately 5-7 days during which you will need to wear a compression garment to ensure proper healing. We highly recommend you schedule a consultation with Dr. Cameron Rokhsar, a double-board-certified Dermatologist and Dermatologic Surgeon, who can advise you on which procedure is best for you.
