Dr. Cameron Rokhsar, MD, FAAD, FAACS, is double board-certified in dermatology and micrographic dermatologic surgery. He completed fellowship training in laser and dermatologic surgery and has more than 20 years of experience treating difficult pigment and laser cases, including permanent makeup around delicate facial structures.

Dr. Rokhsar graduated from Harvard College and NYU School of Medicine. He completed dermatology residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and fellowship training under renowned laser surgeon Dr. Richard Fitzpatrick. He also serves as an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

How Long Does Permanent Makeup Removal Last?

Dense, deeply placed, or recently applied pigment can take longer. Many of our permanent makeup patients need about two to three laser treatments.

We commonly space appointments four to six weeks apart so treated skin can heal before the next laser session.

Once the targeted tattoo pigment has cleared, that removed pigment does not return. Some patients want complete removal, while others want enough fading to correct the brow shape or prepare for new cosmetic tattooing. We recommend waiting until the skin has fully healed before having new permanent makeup placed over the treated area.

Permanent Makeup Removal Downtime or Side Effects

Downtime after Q-switched permanent makeup removal laser treatment is usually limited. Immediately afterward, the skin may appear white or frosted before becoming pink, red, or mildly swollen. These changes occur as the laser interacts with tattoo pigment and usually begin settling as the treated skin starts to heal.

Healing may take several days to one or two weeks, depending on pigment depth and treatment location. Eyelid skin requires added care. We provide specific aftercare instructions, including gentle cleansing and regular application of Vaseline or Aquaphor to keep the treated area protected during healing.

Temporary effects can include redness, swelling, tenderness, crusting, or scabbing. Do not pick treated skin, since this can raise the risk of scarring or pigment changes. Limit sun exposure while healing. Makeup should stay off open or crusted skin and can generally be resumed once the skin surface has closed.
