Dermaplaning Treatment in New York

Dermaplaning1 or dermablading can improve the tone and texture of your skin by removing the top layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair. After treatment, most patients can look forward to a smoother more refined “glowing” complexion. This deep exfoliation2 helps the skin to breathe easier and can allow for better product absorption. Peach fuzz removal is safe for all skin types, ethnicities, and even women who are pregnant or nursing.

Dermaplaning FAQ

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a popular cosmetic procedure that involves manually exfoliating the skin to remove dead skin buildup and fine hairs using a special razor or scalpel. It is different from shaving because the goal is to improve the appearance of the skin by removing the top layers of dead skin cells and fine hair, also known as vellus hair or “peach fuzz”. The treatment aims to make the skin look smoother, brighter, and more youthful.

During a dermaplaning session, a healthcare provider, typically a dermatologist or experienced aesthetician, uses a surgical scalpel or a specialized blade to gently scrape away dead skin cells and vellus hair from the face. The procedure typically takes about 30 minutes to an hour and is relatively painless, although some people may experience mild discomfort or redness afterward. Dermaplaning is a non-invasive treatment and does not require anesthesia or downtime.

Although dermaplaning is generally safe, there is a risk of cutting or nicking the face during the procedure. People with active acne or other skin conditions may not be good candidates for dermaplaning, as the procedure could exacerbate these conditions. You may wish to discuss the potential risks and benefits of dermaplaning with Dr. Rokhsar before undergoing the treatment.

Who can perform dermaplaning?

Licensed aestheticians who have received professional training are qualified to perform dermaplaning. Additionally, plastic surgeons, dermatologists, and other trained specialists who are skilled in skin resurfacing techniques such as dermabrasion and microdermabrasion may also perform dermaplaning.

Our aestheticians at New York Cosmetic, Skin & Laser Surgery Center are licensed professionals with years of experience. Before the procedure, they will discuss your goals, examine your skin to ensure it is healthy enough for the procedure, and explain what to expect before, during, and after dermaplaning. It is also important to review your health history with them.

How does dermaplaning work?

The process involves using a special instrument, such as a scalpel-type blade or surgical blade, to shave away the uppermost layers of the skin. The blade is held at a 45-degree angle while the skin is pulled taut to remove all stray hair and dead skin cells easily. The procedure is different from shaving because the intent is to improve the appearance of the skin, rather than simply removing hair. The procedure is safe and effective for exfoliating the skin, removing hair, and leaving a healthy, glowy appearance.

Dermaplaning helps reduce the appearance of acne scars or other skin imperfections by revealing newer, undamaged skin. The process can help brighten a dull complexion and prevent clogged pores.

What are the benefits of dermaplaning?

  • Improves skin texture and appearance: Dermaplaning can help reduce the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation by revealing newer, undamaged skin.
  • Promotes better skincare product penetration: By removing dead skin cells, dermaplaning can help improve the absorption and effectiveness of skincare products.
  • Enhances makeup application: Dermaplaning can make makeup application smoother and easier by reducing the appearance of blotches or uneven tones in the skin.
  • Removes facial hair: Dermaplaning can remove fine, soft vellus hair, commonly known as “peach fuzz,” which can give the skin a smoother appearance.
  • Can help prevent breakouts: Dermaplaning may help prevent breakouts by reducing the accumulation of acne-causing bacteria.
  • Safe and non-invasive: Dermaplaning is a non-invasive procedure that can be performed quickly and safely without the need for anesthesia or downtime.

While dermaplaning has many benefits, results are temporary and may require multiple treatments to see lasting improvement in acne scars or fine lines. Additionally, potential side effects of dermaplaning may include redness, irritation, and sensitivity to sunlight, and it may not be suitable for everyone.

How to prepare skin for dermaplaning?

Preparing your skin properly before undergoing dermaplaning is crucial to ensuring that the procedure is safe and effective. Here are some steps you should take to prepare your skin for dermaplaning:

  • Stop using exfoliants: As a general rule, you should stop using any exfoliants 5 to 7 days prior to your dermaplaning treatment. This includes exfoliants that contain AHAs, BHAs, enzymes, microbeads, and retinoids as these products are more than likely to cause skin sensitivity.
  • Cleanse your face: Double cleanse your face to make sure all makeup, dirt, and oil are removed from your face.
  • Check for skin irritation: Inspect your skin for cuts, scrapes, or any other forms of skin irritation. The skin should be free of any open wounds or sores before undergoing dermaplaning.

How long does dermaplaning last?

The results of dermaplaning are not permanent and usually last between two to six weeks, depending on various factors such as skincare regimen, lifestyle modifications, and the number of treatments received. In some cases, the results can last up to six months. The duration of the results can vary from person to person, and multiple treatments may be required to see more long-lasting improvements. It is recommended to moisturize the skin after the treatment and to avoid shaving the treated area to ensure proper recovery. Overall, dermaplaning is a temporary treatment, and individuals interested in maintaining the results may need to undergo multiple treatments and follow a proper skincare regimen.

How much does dermaplaning cost?

The cost of dermaplaning can vary depending on a few factors such as the location, the provider (aesthetician or Dr. Rokhsar), and whether it’s done as a single treatment or as part of a package with other facial treatments. Dermaplaning is not covered by insurance, so the cost will have to be paid out of pocket.

What to do after dermaplaning?

After receiving this treatment, it is essential to take proper care of your skin to ensure optimal results and prevent any complications. Here are some common recommendations for what to do after dermaplaning:

  • Cleanse your face gently: Immediately after dermaplaning, use a gentle cleanser to remove any debris or residue left behind on the skin’s surface. Avoid using harsh or abrasive cleansers, which can irritate the skin.
  • Moisturize: Always apply a moisturizer after dermaplaning to prevent your skin from becoming too dry. A rich, nourishing moisturizer will help soothe and protect your skin.
  • Avoid harsh skincare products: In the first few days following the treatment, avoid any ingredients that could irritate the skin.
  • Protect your skin from the sun: After a dermaplaning treatment, you’ll need to be extra careful about sun exposure. Sun damage could reverse the effects of dermaplaning, or create pigment blotches on your freshly uncovered skin. Dr. Rokhsar recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen of at least SPF 30.
  • Avoid shaving the treated area: You should not shave the treated area for a while after dermaplaning.

How to get rid of bumps after dermaplaning?

After dermaplaning, some people may experience bumps on their skin. Here are some tips to get rid of these bumps:

  • Use a gentle cleanser: After dermaplaning, it’s important to use a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt or debris on your skin without causing irritation.
  • Avoid heavy makeup: Avoid applying heavy makeup or products that may clog your pores and cause more bumps to form on your skin.
  • Apply a spot treatment: Apply a spot treatment to the affected area to help heal and protect your skin. It is best to consult with Dr. Rokhsar so he can recommend the best course of treatment.
  • Drink plenty of water: Drinking plenty of water helps to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out, which is especially important after dermaplaning since your skin will be more prone to dryness.

Remember to give your skin time to heal and avoid any further irritation to the affected area. If the bumps persist or become painful, consult with Dr. Rokhsar.

How often should you get dermaplaning?

The frequency of dermaplaning sessions can vary, but it is generally recommended to wait at least three weeks to a month between sessions. While it is possible to see a more healthy appearance after just one session, best results are typically seen after a series of six treatments, with visible improvements after two or three treatments.

It is important not to overdo dermaplaning, as doing it too frequently may cause skin irritation. It is generally not recommended to dermaplane at home every day or even every other day, as the skin on the face is more delicate than other parts of the body and dermaplaning too often can do damage.

It is also recommended to avoid using retinoids for 3 to 5 days before treatment and 2 to 3 days after dermaplaning to avoid skin irritation.
