Aging Hands Treatment
During the natural aging process, collagen and elastin fibers begin to break down and the process is accelerated from overexposure to the sun. It is easy to recognize signs of aging in the hands because there is a very small amount of fat that naturally lies on the backs on hands, so even when a small amount is lost, it becomes noticeable. Skin can appear wrinkly, crinkly and crepe-like with noticeable bulging veins that may appear larger over time. Along with the texture and fat differences that occur, the skin may seem translucent and sun exposure can result in age spots or liver spots. Sunscreen is the best way to avoid having to deal with early aging hands, although hand aging is inevitable.
A hand lift can be the solution to this hard-to-avoid problem. The procedure only lasts ten minutes, and uses fillers to plump the skin and give it a more youthful appearance, resembling that of a natural fat layer. Dr. Rokhsar would administer a filler such as Radiesse, Juvederm, Sculptra or Perlam under the first layer of skin. Fillers can be used in addition to Thermage, a thermal treatment for tightening the skin or even one of Dr. Rokhsar’s Q-switched lasers to remove pigment spots, leaving behind a smoother more youthful complexion in the hand. Surgical removal of excess skin is not a viable option for the hands because of the possible interference with tendons and because of its impracticality. Using fillers and laser or thermal treatments can more effectively treat the skin with the least amount of pain or downtime.
Fraxel is a very effective way to penetrate the lasers of the skin to encourage collagen regrowth. This collagen will replace a lot of the elasticity that was lost from the natural aging process. It usually takes around three to five sessions to remove spots and tighten skin, all depending on the amount of aging the hands have endured.
There is also an extensive collection of topical treatment options. Dr. Rokhsar recommends any of the products made by Skin Labs MD (http://www.skinlabsmd.com/) because they utilize natural ingredients to promote skin recovery and restoration, while encouraging moisture retention.
