Wrinkles are a normal part of aging. But that doesn’t mean that they have to be inevitable. The skin starts to lose the ability to hold moisture as efficiently as it once could. Oil production decreases which leads to slower healing. The skin is the first protector against the elements as well as the first to give away your age. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent certain wrinkle developments from occurring, slowing the daunting aging process. Depending on the type of wrinkles you have, different treatment options will be advised.
There are four distinctly different types of wrinkles:
- Atrophic Crinkling Rhytids- They appear as fine lines on the face that are typically parallel to each other, but tend to disappear when skin is stretched. These wrinkles occur as a loss of elasticity. Elasticity decreases as collagen production decreases. Using skin protection such as broad spectrum sunscreen is one way to prevent the occurrence of these tiny, but noticeable lines. Moisturizers can be used to temporarily replenish and plump the skin and decreasing further wrinkling.
- Permanent Elastic Creases- These lines most commonly appear on the cheeks, the upper line, and along the neck. They become increasing permanent overtime, and speed up their appearance with sun exposure and smoking. Sunscreen is always an important and viable opponent to skin aging. Hyaluronic fillers can restore a certain amount of skin hollowness and any loss of tautness in the face and neck.
- Dynamic Expression Lines- These notorious wrinkles are caused by facial muscle movement. Micro-muscle contractions don’t slow down as you age though! You continue to smile, frown, laugh and furrow your brows as you concentrate. Crow’s feet and other age indicators appear on your face. Botox, Xeomin or Dysport injections are the most effective treatment routes to smoothing out the skin and resurrecting a tighter skin surface.
- Gravitational Folds- Gravity’s daily weight plays a significant part in the aging process. The lines and folds are due to the effects of gravity and become more prevalent as skin begins to fold and sag down the face. This creates a jowl-like appearance along the jaw line. The location of the wrinkles is based on the thickness of the skin. Face lifts are an advantageous approach to treating these types of wrinkles and depending if the patient is surgically adverse or not, there are non-invasive options also available.
