What’s the Best Way to Treat Hyperhidrosis?

Experiencing excessive sweating, or hyperhidrosis is an unpleasant sensation and can be quite embarrassing. It can cause you to withdraw from others or avoid participating in events that would allow your sweating to be noticeable. Here at New York Cosmetic, Skin & Laser Surgery Center in Manhattan and Long Island, we understand the desire to treat excessive sweating and have it gone for good.

Dr. Cameron Rokhsar often receives questions about the best way to treat excessive sweating. Being a double board-certified dermatologist, he has many years of experience treating a wide variety of skin conditions.

What Causes Hyperhidrosis?

Primary Hyperhidrosis

This is the most common form of the condition, and it is usually genetic and noticed during teenage years. This is when you might see sweating in one area such as your hands, armpits, feet, or scalp. Since it’s much more common, we will discuss treating primary hyperhidrosis in this post.

Secondary Hyperhidrosis

If you’re experiencing secondary hyperhidrosis, it is often due to the side effects of a disease such as cancer or tuberculosis. Since this is due to another condition, we will not be covering treating secondary hyperhidrosis in this text, but you can speak to Dr. Rokhsar directly about it.

Treating Excessive Sweating

Topical Solutions

For mild cases, you can treat excessive sweating with solutions that contain aluminum chloride. This compound works by crystalizing the sweat gland, preventing the sweat from seeping through. The solution will often come in a cream or antiperspirant that you can roll on.

Another option for mild cases includes solutions such as Qbrexza. These pads contain glycopyrronium, which suppresses the sweat glands in a particular area. If you use the pads on the affected area once daily, the sweating should subside over time.

Keep in mind that these compounds contain strong chemicals, and you should avoid touching your eyes or other areas of your body directly after use.

Injectables

Botox is an injectable that is commonly used for treating excessive sweating. Very popular around the world, Botox has been in use for decades to treat conditions such as:

Since Botox can freeze specific muscles, that is how it works to reduce sweating. It partially paralyzes the muscles around the sweat glands, reducing the amount of sweat that gets expelled.

The Botox Procedure

Dr. Rokhsar is very well-versed in the application of Botox, as he has even trained other doctors in injection techniques over the years.

When you arrive at our Manhattan or Long Island office for the procedure, Dr. Rokhsar will use ice to gently numb the area experiencing excessive sweating. He will then inject a very thin needle into the area, which should not hurt at all.

miraDry

One of Dr. Rokhsar’s favorite procedures for underarm sweating is miraDry. This is a device that uses microwave energy to eliminate sweat glands permanently.

Each miraDry session will take approximately 30 minutes per arm. Often, Manhattan and Long Islands patients only need to attend two sessions before noticing a significant reduction in sweating.
