Plastic surgery is the process of reconstructing or repairing parts of the body, especially by the transfer of tissue either in the treatment of injury or for cosmetic purposes. The term “plastic surgery” derives from the greek word “plastikos” meaning “able to be molded.” With an expertly trained physician such as Dr. Cameron Rokhsar, cosmetic and medical goals can be met with safe and effective results. In 2011, there were more than 1.5 million surgical procedures conducted in America alone, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. The top five most popular procedures are as follows:
- Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)
- Rhytidectomy (Face Lift)
- Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
- Liposuction (Fat Removal)
Plastic surgery is a very specific type of surgery that can involve the improvement of one’s appearance as well as their ability to function. Repair, reconstruction or replacement of the skin can be executed with cosmetic surgical principles.
There are two types of plastic surgery:
- Cosmetic Plastic Surgery: This surgery is typically done to meet the cosmetic goals of patients who wish to alter or enhance their features. This is done on an aesthetic level to perform treatments such as fat reduction, skin tightening or lifting.
Reconstructive Plastic Surgery: This type of surgically is performed to correct any physical feature that has undergone trauma resulting in deformity. The abnormality may have occurred as a result of a birth defect, congenital disorder, illness or trauma. In many cases, reconstructive surgery will not only address and fix the deformity, but also correct and improve upon that area for cosmetic reasons, thus enhancing the patient’s overall appearance.
